Breaking the Ice on Sustainability: Fastnet Fish’s Cold Store Upgrade
At Fastnet Fish, our mission to contribute to net-zero emissions has driven a significant upgrade to our cold store facility. By investing in state-of-the-art, energy-efficient technology, we’ve not only increased our storage capacity but also drastically reduced our carbon footprint.
Our £2.6m investment has transformed our 44-year-old cold store into an energy efficient warehouse for the 21st century.
With its grand opening on October 10th, this new facility reflects our dedication to sustainability, innovation and long-term environmental impact
Cutting-Edge Cold Storage for a Greener Future
Our cold store upgrade includes several key improvements designed to boost efficiency and environmental performance. We’ve replaced inefficient machinery with advanced eco-friendly plant equipment. We’ve also enclosed our loading bay to create a consistently chilled environment. This reduces heat load, leading to lower energy consumption and greater efficiency.
To maximise our storage capacity, we installed mobile racking systems, expanding our storage facility to 3500 pallets. This upgrade enables us to handle more inventory on-site, reducing the need for external warehouses and the associated road transport emissions.
In a move towards energy independence, Fastnet has also invested in a solar farm to help power the facility. This renewable energy source, combined with energy-efficient cold store machinery, is projected to cut our carbon emissions by up to 50%.

Commitment to Measurable Sustainability
At Fastnet, we believe in being accountable for our environmental impact. That’s why we’re tracking our decarbonisation efforts through the Cold Change Federation’s Climate Change Levy. This partnership sets us a target of reducing our energy usage and carbon emissions by at least 10% annually, keeping us on track for continual improvement and a more sustainable future.
Supporting our Local Community
Leadership in sustainability also means supporting our local economy. The majority of our cold store upgrade was carried out by local businesses, creating jobs and strengthening the Grimsby community. Additionally, our collaboration with the National Centre for Food Manufacturing at the University of Lincoln ensures that we remain at the cutting edge of sustainability research and innovation.
