Bringing Seafood to Schools: Inspiring the Next Generation to Explore the Seafood Industry
In 2023, Fastnet Fish formed a partnership with the Food Teacher’s Centre and the Fishmongers Company to supply fish to participating schools to give young people the chance to prepare, cook and eat fish. Our industry is built on people’s love of seafood, so it is vitally important that we inspire future generations to continue to choose this ethically sourced and sustainable delicious cuisine.
Fastnet has led an initiative as part of the Fish Heroes programme called “Fish from the Chippy”. Schools choose a chip shop as their delivery partner, and Fastnet uses our nationwide delivery service to supply the school with hake, by delivering it to their local chippy for collection.
Since we started our partnership, we have supplied hake to over 100 schools for more than 5,000 pupils to prepare tasty recipes, including Poached Hake Served upon a Chick-Pea and Chorizo Stew; Posh Fish Finger Sandwich and Paupiettes of Hake with a Crème Fraiche and Mushroom Sauce.
The young people that have participated in the food tech lessons all started with apprehension, but after a lesson on the different types of seafood, how they are caught, and transported from the sea to be served on their plates they were all ready and raring to get started. Over 70% of pupils said that they would love to cook and eat fish in the future after their participation in the programme.
