In 1796, the Grimsby Haven Company laid the foundation for a transformation that would shape Grimsby’s destiny. The dredging of The Haven in the early 19th century propelled Grimsby into a bustling port, importing iron, timber, wheat, hemp and flax.

Fast forward to the arrival of the railway in 1848, marking a pivotal moment that connected Grimsby to markets and farms. The construction of docks, including Alexandra Dock and Union Dock, set the stage for Grimsby to become the epicentre of the commercial fishing industry.

By 1856, Grimsby witnessed the birth of its first true fish dock, becoming central to the evolution of the fishing industry. Today, our iconic Dock Tower still stands tall as a landmark testament to Grimsby’s maritime prowess.
